Independent evidence for Pacific markets

Category analysis and retail performance insights

Why did category performance change, and which explanation deserves action?

Patternfield Intelligence examines product and category movement in its retail context. We help brands, category teams, suppliers and retailers define the question, connect relevant available evidence and distinguish a useful commercial signal from a misleading average.

Look beyond the headline sales change

Did category value change because of units, prices, product mix, range or availability? Is growth concentrated in particular stores, formats or periods? Does focal-product performance reflect wider category movement?

These are questions for investigation, not conclusions that can be drawn from a single sales total. We agree category definitions, comparable periods and the commercial decision before selecting an analytical approach.

Evidence and context to review

Relevant inputs may include product hierarchies, store-level transactions or sales, prices, promotions, range, stock availability and execution records. The exact requirements depend on the question and permissions. Coverage and consistency matter as much as the number of records.

We examine changes in the store set, missing periods, pack sizes and category boundaries before interpreting apparent growth. Seasonal or visitor-driven changes may also affect comparability in Pacific markets.

Decisions the analysis can inform

A defined engagement can examine sources of category growth, store and format performance gaps, basket relationships, range questions and opportunities worth testing. Reports explain what the records show, plausible interpretations, uncertainty and the next decision.

Analysis does not guarantee growth or establish a cause merely because two measures move together. A recommendation may be to change the comparison, improve records, run a further test or withhold a decision until the evidence is stronger.

Independent research and a scoped enquiry

Our published supermarket consolidation investigation illustrates the distinction between a documented business change and a causal explanation for later performance. It is a literature-based investigation, not evidence of a commissioned client outcome.

For a category enquiry, describe the market, category, period and decision, plus the records you may be able to use. We will discuss what a credible scope could establish and what would remain unresolved.
